What do you know, Sony Ericsson is caught lying but this is a good, or even great deception. Sony Ericsson seems to have back tracked on their stance that the Xperia X10 would stay on Android 2.1 Éclair and has now official announced that they will push out an update that will update the X10 to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
The unfortunate part of this announcement is that that the update is expected for this Summer. In the world of Android that is not only an eternity, increasing the chance that a later version be pushed out by Google, but also a huge timeline and leads to the likelihood of delays.
The huge time frame could also have a strong correlation with the release of the Xperia Arc and Xperia Play, both running Gingerbread out of the box. Sony Ericsson will probably want to bolster those handset's sales by not cannibalizing potential upgraders from the X10 to the Arc or Play. Pushing out an update to the X10 so close to the release of the Arc and Play was probably a factor in choosing their timeline.
Also, on a related note, it was only a matter of time till XDA devs got cracking at porting the ROMs from the Arc to the X10. So it was only logical that Sony Ericsson get it done themselves.
Nevertheless this is still fantastic news. I'm sure there are many Rogers, Tbaytel and Mobilicity X10 users glad to hear this news.
